Housing
During the first years of the GFC/Wakakusa partnership, each English teacher lived in the Maki home(which is located one floor above the Wakakusa English School). However, as the program expanded over the years, a compact apartment building(called “Young Grass Mitsumi”) for was supplied to house the English teachers. As more and more teachers were needed, a small Japanese house adjacent to the school was also rented to house two additional teachers. In time this too proved inadequate, and eventually two apartments were added on to the pre-existing apartment building. And most recently, a new off-campus 2-person apartment is being rented.
The apartment building where teachers are housed is located in front of the Wakakusa Kindergarten and is a two minute walk from the English school. There are 5 single apartments and 2 two-bedroom (double) apartments. Each apartment has a kitchen, bathroom, a bedroom/living space, a small laundry room, and a balcony, and is furnished with a TV, VCR, telephone, refrigerator, microwave, gas range, washer, and dryer. The microwave functions as a microwave, an oven, and a toaster.
Each kitchen is furnished with cupboards, a kitchen table, and chairs. It also comes with pots and pans, dishes, and silverware. The bedroom/living space includes a desk, a bed, a drying rack, one dresser, and a closet. Towels, bedding, and pillows are also provided. Many apartments also have irons and stereos. There are other items left behind by previous teachers such as spices, books, and videos, etc.
Housing breakdown:
“Young Grass Mitsumi” apartment building: 7 apartments, 9 English teachers
